603 and 603b Multicell Dia-cones

Greetings AUBoarders,
Needing help with 2 speakers that my father has had since the 1950's, since he doesn't use them now. One is a Multicell Dia-cone 603 serial #2261 and the other is a Multicell Dia-cone 604B #7048. The 603B has a small repair to the cone and an ink stamp "May 1967" when I think it was re-coned. The 603 cone is brittle and is starting to crack along the edge.
I see that these were the lower end models of the day but they seem to be somewhat scarce. Do I just put them up on ebay as-is, or is there a better forum? And what would be a reasonable price?

As you know they are low end. I would sell as is, the recone investment likely will be break even at best. Personally would not ask more than 300. I'd eBay them.

You could start low and run for a week, or start a little high and do BIN buy it now, and check the box to allow offers. You can always turn down offers.

I agree with OG, not many people looking to spend good money on low end products.

Right. Thanks. Though I was somewhat under the impression that Altec made high end products. Why else this excellent AUB?

Poor people need speakers too.

Any business is a perpetual balancing act. If you only build the most expensive speakers in the world and they cost a million bucks a pair, how do you pay employees between sales? You might only sell a set every 3 years. Employees and their families like to eat a bit more regularly than that.

Low end Altec is better than some high end from others. But would you settle for the cheapest stripped Mercedes if you could afford better?

Thank you OG. That is about what I was thinking also. Guess if anyone is searching for these they will be checking ebay regularly anyway.

They do Tom ! It's just that the 603's aren't that highly regarded. Altec 515,416,604's,802's288's etc... Are their higher end woofers,duplex's,HF drivers. If you go to eBay and places like that and watch what they sell for it should give you a better understanding.

Altec made some great speaker systems as well like the Model 17,18,19's 9000 series studio monitor's, VoTT's A5/7's etc..

Too Bad they are not a matched pair, I bet with a $3 Piezo super tweeter and a lot of EQ they would sound just fine.

One other thing to add Tom.Once you have heard a higher end Altec system you will understand why this forum is here... And why so many of us here Love the sound of our Altecs ....
